What’s the difference between the License File and the Activation File

Subject

VBUC Developer Edition license file and activation file

Applies to

Visual Basic Upgrade Companion Developer Edition

Inquiry Description

Other variations of this question include:

“The VBUC complains the invalid license and prompt for contacting you.”
“The VBUC DE looks for a *.lic file, but I have a *.bin”
“The VBUC DE looks for a *.bin file, but I have a *.lic”

Troubleshooting/solution

The VBUC Developer Edition employs two different type of files:

License file: this file is called VBUC.lic, this file contains the definitions of the current license installed in the machine. This file is provided via email after the trial download or when the product license is purchased. This file must be allocated into the root of the installation folder in order to operate correctly.

Activation file: this file normally named “SLP_.bin” where “” is the activation key provided on the email after the trial download or when the product license is purchased. This file is used when performing an offline activation and needs to be requested previously.

For more information on the *.bin activation file and how to perform an offline activation read the complete activation process definition.
