Windows 10 is now the only truly supported Microsoft OS. Microsoft stopped all support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. Security vulnerabilities and new-found bugs are no longer addressed. No device driver updates are available; no new hardware certifications.
Windows 7 is out of support since January, 2020. Windows 8.x was a problem child for Microsoft, which is why they pushed mandatory updates to Windows 10. Windows XP applications (Win32/.NET 1.1) can be run on Windows 7+ in compatibility mode, but this also has known vulnerabilities.
The only safe solution is migrating your applications to .NET 3.5 or later for Windows 10 deployment.
